My co-worker Kevin (@kevinguenther) introduced me to the Black Harbor this morning, a “collective exploration of Art & Design”, where he discovered the oh-so-lovely Leslie & The Badgers, as showcased above. A nice way to start the day!
Leslie reminds me a little of another of my female singer-songwriter heart throbs, Jenny Lewis, seen here performing [...]

My wife has become a huge Etsy fan over the last few months, and has discovered many unique, smart artists & jewelers who combine intelligence with skill. One such example is I Am Star Stuff:
Of course the starstuff idea comes from the famous Carl Sagan statements: that we are composed of the stuff stars [...]

“Too often in the past we have thought of the artist as an idler and dilettante and of the lover of arts as somehow sissy or effete. We have done both an injustice.”

I’m a cycling fan. This show looks like a wonderful display of work by photographer Brent Humphreys, with show art direction & design by http://www.weaponofchoice.ca/. Wish I could find myself in Austin.
Lance Armstrong and his team seem to have really embraced art & design as they mature the Livestrong brand.
I’ll get behind any effort that [...]

One of my most treasured albums, and a sure sign I’m older than I care to admit, I see that The Stone Roses are getting ready to re-issue a 20th anniversary edition of their classic, monumental self-titled album from 1989, “The Stone Roses.”
To celebrate, I offer one of their best songs, on my Top 10 [...]

Designer M.S. Corley is seeing a fair amount of success with his ongoing process of re-designing book covers in unexpected and fresh ways. Lots of great stuff to see here.

This new sculpture by Gordon Reeve was just installed. Lucky for me, it’s directly across the street from my office, in Assiniboine Park. So I dodged the morning rush hour yesterday and captured a few shots.
I famously (not) dropped out of Gordon’s sculpture class way back when I attended the University of Manitoba. It had [...]

I feel like I’m watching an animated David Carson layout from 1996. And that’s not a bad thing, because Michael Stipe is great. We saw R.E.M. play in Vancouver in 1995 (with Sonic Youth) and then I had a chance to chat with him at my grad show in 2000.
Still waiting for that [...]

I had the opportunity to see Stefan Sagmeister speak in Toronto in 2006. In person, he seems humble and grounded in ideas. His personality shows well in this short from Hillman Curtis.

I was browsing the CBC site and came across an article about a (former) Winnipeg artist – Micah Lexier – who has reprised a project he began ten years ago at the Winnipeg Art Gallery entitled “David.” In his original exhibition, he displayed full-size black and white photos of males named David, with one representative [...]
